Dear Senator Cranston:
Thank you for your letter of October 22 in behalf of Mr. Leonard F. Tate, who in an October 7 letter to you asked a number of questions relating to the assassination of Swedish Minister Olof Palme.
Mr. Tate finds it conceivable that "certain 'U.S. government and agents may well have been involved in the assassination of Olof Palme."
I must categorically reject any such notion. Throughout the exhaustive Swedish investigation of the assassination, no U.S. Government involvement in any way has ever been suggested.
Regarding U.S. cooperation with Swedish authorities, the FBI, in response to specific requests from the Swedish police, has on several occasions given assistance in this investigation.
Mr. Tate's suggestion that the World Anti-Communist League (WACL) may have been involved in the assassination strikes us as unfounded.
The Swedish Government has never discussed such possibility with the U.S. Government, and this theory has never been alleged within the U.S. Government.
We are unaware of any planned or completed investigations of any kind by U.S. authorities to explore whether WACL or U.S. Government were involved in the assassination.
I hope this information will be useful to you in replying Mr. Tate.
With best wishes,
Sincerely,
J. Edward Fox
Assistant Secretary
