Dear Senator Cranston:

SUBJECT: INVESTIGATION INTO THE ASSASSINATION OF SWEDISH PRIME MINISTER OLOF PALME

Recent news reports indicate that Swedish police officials have focused their investigation into the assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme on local Swedish associates of the World Anti-Communist League (WACL).

Quoting an unnamed source close to Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson, the newspaper Aftonbladet reports the scenario police are coming up with is that members of the WACL contacted like-minded people in Sweden with the idea of murdering Olof Palme.

The WACL, provided agents and plans, while local Swedes gave on-the-spot advice and helped with the details around Olof Palme's habits.

As you know, the WACL, headed by retired U.S. General John Singlaub, whose members include a number of prominent, senators and representatives, as well as Nazi war criminals, various stripes of U.S. ultra-rightists, and figures tied to rightwing terrorist organizations in Europe, Japan, and Latin America, is a powerful and well-financed organisation with close ties to the Nicaraguan Contras, Latin American death squads, the Unification Church, counterrevolutionary groups in Angola, Afghanistan, and Kampuchea.

Since Olof Palme, a longtime peace activist and critic of the U.S. war in Southeast Asia as well as its more recent aggression in Central America, was also a founding member of Six-Nation Summit on Nuclear Disarmament and spearheaded the Five Continent Peace Initiative contained in the group's Delhi Declaration, he certainly presented a thorn in the side of the current U.S. administration policies in a number of areas.

It is certainly conceivable, therefore, that, in view of relations in recent years of U.S. involvement in attempted and actual political assassinations worldwide, certain U.S. government officials and agents may well have been involved in the assassination of Olof Palme.

Is the U.S. Government cooperating fully with Swedish officials in their investigation?

Have there been or are there contemplated any congressional investigations into the WACL's possible involvement in the Olof Palme assassination and the possible involvement, directly or indirectly, of U.S. government officials and agents, whether acting in an official capacity or not?

Have there been or are there contemplated any judicial investigations or U.S. authorities into the WACL's possible involvement in the Olof Palme assassination in violation of U.S. laws and the further possible involvement,

Have there been or are there contemplated any congressional or judicial investigations into activities of the WACL which might contravene U.S. law?

Dear Senator Cranston:

Thank you for your letter of October 22 in behalf of Mr. Leonard F. Tate, who in an October 7 letter to you asked a number of questions relating to the assassination of Swedish Minister Olof Palme.

Mr. Tate finds it conceivable that "certain 'U.S. government and agents may well have been involved in the assassination of Olof Palme."

I must categorically reject any such notion. Throughout the exhaustive Swedish investigation of the assassination, no U.S. Government involvement in any way has ever been suggested.

Regarding U.S. cooperation with Swedish authorities, the FBI, in response to specific requests from the Swedish police, has on several occasions given assistance in this investigation.

Mr. Tate's suggestion that the World Anti-Communist League (WACL) may have been involved in the assassination strikes us as unfounded.

The Swedish Government has never discussed such possibility with the U.S. Government, and this theory has never been alleged within the U.S. Government.

We are unaware of any planned or completed investigations of any kind by U.S. authorities to explore whether WACL or U.S. Government were involved in the assassination.

I hope this information will be useful to you in replying Mr. Tate.

With best wishes,

Sincerely,

J. Edward Fox
Assistant Secretary
Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs
